A staunch advocate of the pleasures of the table and healthy cuisine for all, Paul Bocuse was one of the first great chefs to open up their cuisine to the general public. Check out one of his affordable brasseries, named after the points of the compass, where seasonal dishes are prepared with loving care.

First, head north to the "Nord" (150 seats) to savour typical Lyonnaise and Alsatian cuisine. Next, turn south to the "Sud" (190 seats) to enjoy the flavours of the Mediterranean, east to the "Est" (160 seats) located in the former Brotteaux railway station, for a taste of travel, or west to the "Ouest" (400 seats) for classic cuisine spiced with a hint of exoticism.

Sports fans are invited to the heart of Groupama Stadium, the venue for Olympique Lyonnais’s triumphs, where they will be welcomed by the Brasserie des Lumières (seating 485), which offers a meal with a view of the pitch.

Looking for a truly authentic Lyonnaise establishment? Then head to the Brasserie Georges, founded in 1836, where you can admire its magnificent 550-seat Art Deco hall while basking in the shadow of famous past diners the likes of Emile Zola, Jules Verne and even Edith Piaf! Savour its famous choucroute (sauerkraut) or try another typical brasserie dish, all washed down with the delicious Georges beer brewed on site.

Presqu’île: the epicentre of Lyon gourmandise

In the city centre, head to Rue Mercière and step inside La Brasserie des Deux Rives (227 seats), an enchanting den that reinterprets the classic traditions of French brasseries with its succession of retro-style rooms.

Next door, the Bistrot de Lyon (160 seats) combines typical brasserie and Lyonnaise specialities in a charming old-fashioned atmosphere complete with a chic terrace looking onto the bustling street.

Just a stone's throw away, the Cintra (90 seats) offers a journey through time across the Lyon landscape, amid a historical setting of woodwork and stained glass created in 1921.

If you are curious to see what a modern revisited version of the brasserie looks like, then head to the Brasserie Roseaux (111 seats) in the 6th arrondissement. Run by Michelin-star chefs Tabata and Ludovic Mey, the restaurant pays homage to the great French culinary tradition in an elegant Art Deco atmosphere.

In the 7th arrondissement, you can set your cutlery down at Roliko (110 seats), which plays on the flavours of the south-west in a warm and friendly setting.

After a morning of treasure hunting at the Puces du Canal flea market in Villeurbanne, head to the Brasserie Oscar (500 seats) for a gourmet lunch based on fresh products in a vintage atmosphere.
