An exceptional hotel in a unique building

The InterContinental has moved into the majestic setting of the Grand Hôtel-Dieu, near Place Bellecour, in the heart of Lyon’s Presqu’île district.

Last updated date : 09/09/2019

Reopened to the public following major renovation works, the Grand Hôtel-Dieu is an integral part of Lyon’s history.

Originally a hospital managed by religious congregations, it was built on this location in the twelfth century. It was extended and modernised in the fifteenth century, and its monumental facade and dome were designed by architect Jean-Germain Soufflot in the eighteenth century. The Hôtel-Dieu was a hospital at the cutting-edge, while its maternity ward was dear to the heart of locals. Many of the city’s residents drew their first breath here!

Closed in 2010, its doors are now open to the general public, with an ambitious offering that features shops, restaurants, a hotel and the future Cité de la Gastronomie (City of Gastronomy).

A new five-star gem

For this new establishment, interior architect Jean-Philippe Nuel, who has already collaborated with the hotel group for the decoration of the InterContinental Marseille, was tasked with bringing together the best of old and new.

The result? The interior decor features understated luxury, precious but not ostentatious, which respects the building, while bringing all the comfort and elegance expected by a demanding clientele.

The InterContinental Lyon Hôtel-Dieu has 144 rooms and suites, ranging from 28 m² (superior rooms) to 210 m² for the presidential suite, which offers stunning views over the grand dome. By the Rhône, the duplex suites feature six-metre-high ceilings and are beautifully lit by sunlight coming through the building’s large windows.

References to the golden age of Lyon’s silk industry adorn the walls, creating a warm, intimate atmosphere.

Opening out onto the city, the hotel welcomes both guests and local residents in its restaurant Epona (100 seats), run by Chef Mathieu Charrois, who serves reinvented Lyonnaise cuisine. When the weather is fine, the restaurant’s terrace offers a perfect spot in the calm, green inner courtyard.

The jewel of this establishment? The bar, located beneath Soufflot’s 32-metre-high dome. For a gourmet snack or drink, this amazing bar is open to all, offering a breathtaking and unique setting. !
