Musée Urbain Tony Garnier - Cité Tony Garnier
4 rue des Serpollières - 69008 Lyon 8ème
Set off to discover the 25 painted walls in the social housing estate designed by the architect Tony Garnier and built between 1920 and 1933. You can also visit a show flat from the 1930s.
The origins of the Etats-Unis district date back to 1917. Édouard Herriot, mayor of Lyon, announced the creation of housing for factory workers located between La Guillotière and Vénissieux: this was one of the first public-initiative social housing estate.
Tony Garnier, the architect who won the Grand Prix de Rome, was chosen to coordinate this monumental project. Work began in 1920 and the first residents moved in in July 1933.
Rehabilitated between 1985 and 1997, the working-class Etats-Unis district saw the birth of an original experiment in cultural development: from 1988, CitéCréation artists designed and created monumental paintings on its walls. This was the birth of the Musée urbain Tony Garnier, which became the Cité Musée Tony Garnier in 2024.
Today, the Cité Musée offers a variety of tours of the Tony Garnier estate, including a series of buildings and leafy courtyards, 25 mural paintings, a show flat that recreates the atmosphere of the 1930s and temporary exhibitions.
