French scientist André-Marie Ampère (1775-1836) spent his youth on his family's estate 10 miles northwest of Lyon. His mansion now houses the Museum of Electricity.

Musée Ampère

Across 11 rooms, discover historical douments, operating models of Ampere's basic experimets in electromagnetism. Other exhibits explain discoveries by Volta, Oersted and Faraday.
Also on display are electrostatic machines, generators, motors and telecommunication systems, as well as electrical lighting and photovoltaic technology.
Apere's work was so important that his name was given to the basic unit of electrical current, the "ampere".
